Graded ExamsThe RSAMD currently offer graded exams in traditional music on clarsach up to Grade 5. Books of the exam material are available from Scotlands Music. The Practical and Aural Musicianship, Quick Study and Harp music can also be purchased as individual sheet music dowloads. Syllabus information is available from the RSAMD.
Trinity Guildhall run Joint Assessment Grades for clarsach from Grades 1-8. These are currently operated within schools music services. The National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School run these exams annually for their pupils. The repertoire is all traditional material played by memory, along with technical work developed specifically for traditional playing on clarsach by Karen Marshalsay the Centre's clarsach tutor. The supporting tests are the same as the classical music exams. Plockton pupils do sight-reading and either improvisation or aural skills.
